Pre-Conference Workshop/Training:
Day/date : Saturday and Sunday, 12-13 July 2025-
Time : 08.30 -18.00 WIB
Place : Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Universitas Diponegoro, Semarang
Brief description of the training:
This workshop on Exploring Spillover and Contagious Effects in Regional Economic Development offers an integrated approach combining conceptual insights with hands-on applications using STATA. Participants will explore the theoretical foundations of spatial econometrics, including spatial dependence, spatial lag and error models, and the construction of spatial weight matrices. Emphasis will be placed on understanding how economic outcomes in one region are influenced by surrounding areas, highlighting the importance of spillover and contagious effects in analyzing regional interdependencies and informing territorial development policies.
In addition to conceptual discussions, the workshop provides practical sessions where participants will work directly with regional datasets to apply spatial econometric models using STATA. Key skills include estimating spatial models, interpreting direct and indirect effects, and conducting model diagnostics. Designed for researchers, graduate students, and policy analysts, this workshop empowers participants to apply spatial econometrics in real-world contexts of regional planning and development. A basic understanding of econometrics and STATA is recommended but not required.
By the end of this two-day workshop, participants will be able to:
- Conceptual Understanding
- Understand the theoretical foundations of spatial econometrics, including spatial dependence, spatial heterogeneity, and spatial autocorrelation.
- Differentiate between spatial lag models, spatial error models, and spatial Durbin models.
- Interpret spillover and contagious effects in the context of regional economic development and policy analysis.
- Hands-On STATA Applications
- Construct and manipulate spatial weight matrices using STATA.
- Estimate spatial econometric models (SAR, SEM, SDM) and interpret coefficients with spatial implications.
- Perform diagnostic tests for spatial dependence and model specification in cross-section and panel data.
- Simulation and Applied Analysis
- Apply spatial econometric techniques to real-world regional datasets.
- Simulate policy scenarios to assess the magnitude and reach of regional spillover effects.
- Present and discuss simulation results to draw policy-relevant conclusions.
Participants will gain both foundational knowledge and practical competencies to apply spatial econometrics in research and policy evaluation related to regional and territorial development.
